Probiotics are beneficial cultures that, when eaten in adequate amounts, can truly help improve our digestive health, promote regularity and enhance our immune system, thereby, benefiting our general health in numerous ways.

Probiotics can be taken in gel-cap form or enter our system by eating foods that have probiotics added to them. The interesting thing is that we need to know just how much we need per serving, which is something that has a least a billion bacteria per serving. To help your digestive system, it is necessary to look for those products that have been labelled with the type and the amount of live bacteria in them. Strains of Bifdobacterium and Lactobacillus have been shown by researchers to be of some benefit. But, if you stick to the billion bacteria per serving, you will be doing yourself and your system a real favor.

You may ask, why probiotics? Although we have millions of good bacteria living in our body, we need to have these good bacteria replenished when the body is in exhaust mode, and our digestive system seems to be needing help. By adding gut-friendly bacteria to our systems, the Canadian Research and Development Center for Probiotics, says we can aid digestion, prevent diarrhea and reduce the symptoms of lactose intolerance.

Our own friendly bacteria can be drastically reduce by antibiotics, gastrointestinal illnesses, bad bacteria or just in time, they grow less and less, perhaps by other chronic illnesses, or viruses. The Canadian Research and Development Center director, Gregor Reid, has been studying inner microbes for 25 years and he feels we need to nourish our gut-friendly bacteria (good bacteria) on a regular daily basis.

Once found only in fermented milk products such as yogurt and kefer, now we have that beneficial bugs (probiotics) are added to juices, cheeses, granola and other snack bars, yogurt drinks at your grocery store. According to a market analyst, Datamonitor, to date, we have 53 new probiotic foods or drinks that have been distributed to the grocery market. Researchers have shown that dairy products are an effective manor in which to deliver probiotic cultures to make their way to the intestinal tract.

Often, people ask how long they should consume probiotics before they notice a difference. Since the probiotics stay in the colon for short periods of time, it only makes sense that probiotics be used on a continuous basis, to nourish our intestinal inner flora.

Did you know that 70% of the body’s immunity system is based on the digestive system? Clinical research for over 20 years has indicated that probiotics can improve digestive system, promote regularity, reduce the growth of harmful bacteria, enchance the immunce system, and strengthen our natural defence system. These reasons prove just how important probiotic nurturing is such a benefit to healthy living. Interestingly enough, literally translated, Probiotic means “for life”.

What is a phytochemical anyways? In short, phytochemical ingredients are plant-derived compounds, which Julie Daniluk, holistic nutritionist and Co-owner of The Big Carrot Natural Food Market in Toronto, says protect the plants from environmental stresses, including insects, and weather ups and downs. Julie Daniluk says “While phytochemicals are not essential nutrients to human life, it is becoming quite clear that they do infer a great number of health benefits to us as well.”

It is apparent that while phytochemicals offer protection to several chronic diseases, diabetes, cancer, heart disease and Alzheimer’s, they also play a part in chemical warfare in a variety of ways.

Basically, the researcher’s evidence show phytochemicals are able to reduce the oxidative damage to our cells, that cause various diseases like cancer. Foods such as grapes, dark chocolate and carotenoids, sweet potatoes and green leafy vegetables are examples of phytochemicals full of antioxidant material which help us to diseases like cancer.

Phytochemicals called allicin, found in garlic, contain antibacterial properties. Many people use garlic for their heart health and to avoid getting colds. Fortunately, those who do not want to have the “garlic breath syndrome”, garlic can be purchased in capsules that do not give off the pungent aroma.

According to Julie Daniluk, various phytochemical have the ability to alter enzyme functioning in a way the helps stave off disease. There is a chemical called indole-3-carbonyl which is found in cabbage, broccoli and kale which stimulates enzymes that reduce the effectiveness of estrogen, thereby reducing the risk of breast cancer.

Daniluk says “Some plant compounds such as isoflavones present in soy, can directly alter how hormones (such as estrogen) behave in the progression of disease.” Isoflavones actually have been found to regulate hormonal action.

Even phytochemicals found in chemicals such as capsaicin, which is found in chili peppers, can interfere in the reproduction of cell DNA to prevent the multiplication of cancer cells.

“The best way to give your diet a phytochemical boost is to load up your grocery cart with more fruits and vegetables”, Daniluk says. She recommends we have at least 10 daily servings of produce will provide us with plenty of these disease fighters. Daniluk recommends that we eat multiple coloured fruits and vegetables, as the different pigment plays host to different chemicals. Think of all the healthy recipes you can create with the abundance of foods in the list below.

According to Daniluk, studies have produced results claiming these 10 phytochemicals are effective in helping us to keep healthy living. Each phytochemical will be named, what it does and where it is to be found.

Beta Carotene
Beta carotene supports reproductive health, boosts our immunity, and helps fights cancer. It is found in carrots, sweet potato, squash, cantaloupe and mango.

Lutein
Lutein helps fight age-related vision loss, and is found in spinach, Brussels sprouts, egg yolk, broccoli, and Swiss chard.

Sulforaphane
Sulforaphane helps reduce cancer risk and inhibits bacterial growth and is found in cauliflower, kale, bok choy, broccoli and broccoli sprouts.

Curcurmin
Curcurmin helps diminish inflammation and the spread of cancer cells; evidence has been found that it may slow the progression of multiple sclerosis. Curcurmin is found in turmeric, curry powder.

Lycopene
Lycopene battles prostate cancer and heart disease, and is found in red bell peppers, tomatoes, watermelon, red grapefruit and apricots.

Resveratrol
Resveratrol helps to destroy cancer cells, fights back viruses and may even give a benefit to exercise performance. Resveratrol is found in grapes, berries, peanuts and red wine.

Quercetin
Quercetin helps fight cancer, heart disease and respiratory disease. It is found in capers, onion, apples and citrus fruits.

Anthocyanin
Anthocyanin helps to improve cognitive ability, urinary tract infections and diabetes risk, and is found in berries, eggplant, red cabbage, legumes red and blue grapes.

Epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG)
This phytochemical fights psoriasis and other inflammatory skin conditions as well as boosts memory.

Allicin
Allicin lowers cholesterol, and is a strong antibacterial/antiviral agent; it is found in leeks, onions and garlic.

Daniluk says that the most important thing is variety of fruits and vegetables. So very many phytochemicals are just being discovered, which makes it difficult to say which is more important. The idea is to fill your kitchen with whole grains, legumes, spices mentioned and more, herbs and nuts and “stay away” from all the processed food that is obviously phytochemical-deficient.

Remember the organic aisle in the grocery store as these items are pesticide free and usually local. This is an interesting concept; Daniluk says that “If the plant does not have to fight off insects, it reduces the need for its own phytochemical defence system.” This is similar to our antibiotic overuse. If we always use antibiotics, soon the so be it, “bugs” become resistant.

All of the phytochemicals mentioned may be difficult to pronounce, but, you will know where to find them after reading this article.

Since phytochemicals have been in the news, they are available for the public to purchase in a supplement form. Talk to your doctor first before taking any form of supplement. Check your refrigerator and cupboard. See what you use and what you need in the form of phytochemicals in your foods. Eating organic foods containing these phytochemicals paints the best picture of the path to healthy living.

Why do almost all people wait until they get a serious medical problem to start living healthy? I'll give you some examples of what I mean in the form of questions. Why does a smoker start stopping to smoke after smoking for 50 years after they find out they got terminal lung cancer, such as emphysema? How come an alcoholic stops drinking after they kill somebody on the road while driving drunk? Why do sexually promiscuous people all of a sudden start living healthy after they get a terrible, incurable STD, like HIV/AIDS? Another example could be why do people deal begin to finally deal with their obesity and being overweight after the doctor tells them they now have heart disease or diabetes? People are weird and procrastinate by nature in my opinion. Any answers would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

The key to Staying Healthy and Loving Life is to manage stress. The benefits of Stress Management and Healthy Living is a longer life. I’m sure you know that nutrition deficiencies can be caused by too much stress in your life.

There are lots of factors that this can be attributed to.

First, everything nowadays seems to be happening so fast. People feel like if they will not do anything in order to keep up with the pace of the world that they live in, life may be tougher in the long run. But,if you Practice Managing Stress and Staying Healthy you’ll live longer.

Simplicity is Beauty

Does anybody still believe in the meaning of this old saying? If you want to maintain a balanced and healthy lifestyle, you must first understand what you can and cannot do. You cannot keep on acquiring things that you cannot even afford. You cannot venture into various adventures that you may not even have time for or your health must not risk doing.

There are things that can spice up your life even if you keep on living by your means and according to what you can only afford. You just have to be creative and share your passion and dreams to the people whom you care about. This way, you are maintaining a healthy attitude and likewise, you are not risking your health unto any untoward scenes.

If you are concerned about stress and how it may affect your health in the long run, here are some activities that you must look deeply into. If you are guilty of doing the following, maybe it is time for you to think things over and start on the activities that will make you more productive but at the same time healthy.

1. If you are stressed out, your way of coping is to resort to the wrong foods. You tend to eat treats with high levels of fat, salt and sugar. This is caused when the levels if your cortisol or your stress hormone increase. Other people tend to gulp a whole gallon of ice cream after a stressful day. Imagine what it can do to your body in the long run. You may want to rethink things and consider the harmful effects of these activities before resorting to them.

2. Stressed out people also resort to coffee to increase their energy level. This may be a good morning starter. But if you become too much addicted to caffeine, this will cause your health trouble in the long run. You must not depend on coffee to keep you alert throughout the day. When a minute-long walk or a quick exercise can do the trick, then do such before you start going for another refill of your caffeine addiction.

3. Another thing that happens more often when a person is stressed out is that they skip the important meals. They do their best in order to keep up with a deadline and finish all their task. But they no longer think about their own health in the process. Such bad behavior will take its toll on your body as you get older. This may cause more problems in the end. It will be better if you will learn to finish your tasks but be mindful of eating the right meals in between.

This way, you are loving life and loving your obligations at the same time. And both may prove to be rewarding in the process.

Healthy living is very important for your well-being. Unfortunately many of us forget this important fact and let our health go down due to negligence. Despite our busy lifestyles it is still possible to take care of yourself.

Fast foods and junk food: With our hectic, fast paced lifestyles we have become very dependent on fast foods and quick junk food snacks. This is affecting not only our own well-being but also that of our children.

There are more overweight children than ever before and this is largely due to these foods. If possible try to reduce this fast food habit for yourself and especially for your kids. Also try to eat alternative snacks, instead of sodas, candies and chips try eating fruit snacks and drinking more water.

In order to get back to a healthy living style we need to turn our eating habits around. We can do this by eating a well-balanced natural diet. This includes fruit, vegetables and whole grain foods. Try to eat less processed and refined foods and choose those with higher fiber.

More ways to improve your overall well-being:
– Get enough sleep: It is very important to get enough sleep, failing to do so will stress out your body and decrease your energy. This will lead to unnecessary snacking and weight gain.
– Exercise: Exercise is always good to maintain healthy living. You can take a brisk daily walk or if you live in a harsh climate take advantage of local gyms. You can even purchase some exercise equipment of your own and exercise for about 20 minutes 3 times a week.
– Drink lots of water-8 glasses per day. This will help your body flush out toxins and also maintain your overall well-being. Water is very good for all parts of your body and is a good alternative to soda and sweet drinks.
– Be moderate in eating and exercising. Exercising is good but do not go overboard and over exercise this will put undue strain on your body and will not help you. It is good to exercise under supervision initially then carry on by yourself. Overeating is extremely bad for your system and will lead to weight gain. Try to eat in moderation so that you can avoid abusing your system.

With these few points you can enjoy a healthy living style and live your life to the fullest. When you have an overall good physical condition you can do more and live a happy full life.

It seems that everyone is concerned with healthy living these days. This is a good thing; it is important to be concerned with your health and to look for better strategies to improve your life. On the other hand, it also seems like everyone has a quick solution for healthy living, for a hefty fee of course. It seems at times that you can’t turn on the television or open a magazine without seeing a celebrity or doctor trying to get you to buy their new book detailing the latest miracle diet that will change your life, whether it is fresh ground wheat grass or a daily tin of Brazil nuts. The reality is that these diets are unnecessary. Healthy living is available to everyone, and does not depend on buying the latest diet book or the most expensive vitamins. All that you need to do is to start making healthy decisions.

How to eat healthy

The most important facet of your life that you need to change as you move towards healthy living is to start eating nutritious foods. Do not try to follow a trendy diet, just eat a balanced diet of nutritious foods. When you eat well, you lower your risk of many health problems such as obesity, type 2 diabetes, heart disease, certain kinds of cancer and osteoporosis. You will also give yourself more energy, allowing you to enjoy life again.

The most important group of foods, and the one that is most often the cause of poor diets, is fruit and vegetables. There is nothing particularly innovative about this advice; everyone knows that you need to eat your fruit and vegetables. The main problem is that so few people actually consume the seven to ten daily servings of fruits and vegetables they are supposed to have each day. And when they do eat fruit and vegetables, it is in forms that include added sugar, salt or fat.

The food group that we all eat too much of is meat. Try to limit your meat intake, and emphasize meat alternatives for your protein needs. While you definitely need meat or an alternative for the protein, most people eat far too much from this food group. You will be surprised at how little is actually required to get you through the day.

Get active

Once you have started eating well, it is time to go out and get some physical activity! Now, this does not mean that you have to incorporate a rigorous physical workout into your daily routine. Just including small amounts of physical activity in your life will make a difference. So take the stairs instead of the escalator, or walk to the corner store instead of driving four blocks. Start slowly and incorporate more physical activity into your life, and you will be amazed at how quickly the results will add up.

Have fun

The final component of healthy living is to have a healthy mind. Build up a strong peer group who will give you the social support you need to be truly happy. This will reduce your stress, which will only lead to a healthier body.

Cinnamon is a sweet warm flavor that is used as a favourite holiday spice, but also used in savory dishes year round. It is one of the oldest known spices that is grown in the bark of a cinnamon tree. It is dried rolled into cinnamon sticks also know as quills. Cinnamon which grows in India, Sri Lanka, Indonesia, Brazil, Vietnam and Egypt can be dried and ground into a powder. This powder is what we know it as a benefit for healthy living.

The characteristic flavor and sweet aroma of cinnamon comes from a compound in the essential oil of the bark called cinnamon-aldehyde.
There are four main varieties of cinnamon. Cassia cinnamon and Ceylon cinnamon are the most favorite. Ceylon cinnamon is sometimes call the “true cinnamon”; which is more expensive and has a sweeter taste. The quills area softer and can be used in a coffee grinder, and is sold in specialty stores. In North America, most stores sell the less expensive variety, Cassia cinnamon. It is a darker colour and the quills are harder. It must be ground professionally, as it is difficult to grind in the coffee grinder.

Besides using it in cooking, cinnamon was and is used in traditional medicine; the Cassia cinnamon is used for colds, flatulence, nausea, diarrhea and even painful menstrual periods; and it is also believed to improve energy, vitality, and circulation for those who have hot top body and cold feet.

What is so special about cinnamon is that it may offer protective benefits to our health. A teaspoon of cinnamon is rich in nutrition, supplying fibre, calcium manganese, iron and oxidants. Cinnamon may also help reduce the growth of bacteria and reduce inflammation.

Cinnamon is a common ingredient in chai tea, and it is believed to improve digestion of fruit, milk and other diary products.

Further studies have shown that just the smell of cinnamon may be able to boost brain power. Although research is still in its beginning stages, researchers suggest that it may help lower blood sugar, cholesterol and triglycerides in people with type 2 diabetes.

According to Cathy Wong, in “Your Guide to Alternative Medicine”, one of the first studies in 2003 in the journal “Diabetes Care”, sixty people with Type 2 diabetes took 1, 3, or 6 grams of cinnamon in pill for daily, equivalent to 1/4 tsp to 1 tsp. of cinnamon. After 40 days, all 3 amounts of cinnamon reduced fasting blood glucose by 18 to 29%, triglycerides by 23 to 30% and LDL (Bad cholesterol by 7 to 27% and above all total cholesterol 12 to 26 per cent. Cathy says that there were concerns with the study as for example; there was no difference in benefit to those who took the three doses of cinnamon.

In another study scientists looked at the effect of cinnamon on 79 people with type 2 diabetes who were not on insulin therapy, but were taking or diabetic meds or modifying their diet. They took approximately 3 grams of cinnamon or a placebo three times a day for four months. There was a significant reduction in blood glucose in the people taking the cinnamon compared to the people taking the placebo 3 times a day for four months. There was no difference in glycosylated hemoglobin (HbA1C levels) which is a test that tells how well blood sugar has been controlled during the previous 3 to 4 months.

In a six week study involving 25 postmenopausal women with type 2 diabetes, women were give 1.5 grams of cinnamon daily or a placebo. There was no effect on blood sugar, insulin sensitivity, or cholesterol levels, according to Wong.

Wong also showed that in a small Swedish study published in the “American Journal of Medicine” where 14 people were given either rice pudding on its own or rice pudding with cinnamon. Researchers found that those that added cinnamon lowered the post-meal rise in blood glucose compared to those who did not consume cinnamon.

The use of cinnamon in cooking is a pleasant way of consuming cinnamon; on an apple, on pudding, in cakes, loaves and muffins and stews. And, there is nothing nicer than a cup of Chai tea with cinnamon to make your day.

Cassia cinnamon found in supplement form and regular cooking form does contain at high levels of use, some Coumarin. It is also found in celery, parsley, chamomile, sweet clover. The point is always check with your doctor before you decide you want to try cinnamon or any supplement that may affect your medications you are taking.

Using cinnamon, normally in baking and in teas is a healthy benefit for healthy living, so enjoy the sweet aroma. You can also buy cinnamon oil for aromatherapy. There again, check with your doctor – if you have the go-ahead, it will be one of most enjoyable experiences for benefits of healthy living.

Traditional forms of medicine from China, Japan, Indian, and many First Nations groups, have always had a place for meditation, as a constant in their lives, although North Americans are just touching the tip of the iceberg with the information and just how meditation can be the best recipe for healthy living.

Meditation has received recognition for being beneficial for psychological issues for many years, and is now recommended for conditions such as insomnia, depression, anxiety, inability to “focus” and “mental fog.” Some therapists are even using it for conditions such as cancer, HIV, and cardiovascular disease. Just how does this work?

We have two autonomic nervous systems; one is the “sympathetic”, where we go when we are really stressed out, and our blood vessels get constricted, pumping blood to all the extremities so the muscles can work faster and harder; this is know as the “fight or flight” response.
Our respiration and heart rate tend to overwork themselves, and it appears that most of us live in a state of stress; therefore, a fair amount of our time is spent in the sympathetic mode, which is not a good thing.

The other part of our nervous system is our “parasympathetic” nervous system, know as our “digest and rest” response, at which time, our body is allowing the blood vessels to dilate; therefore allowing our circulation improve throughout the body, and more specifically, to our organs and digestive system.

Unfortunately, when we are in the “fight or flight mode”,which is most of the time, our immune system does not function well. One stress simply compounds another, and no end appears in sight. In addition, we have careers, families, other interests that consume our days; just when do we have time to sit and think about nothing? We must commit ourselves to a healthy, easy, no cost practice like meditation, to keep our minds on the right track.

Meditation, by bringing someone out of a sympathetic state into a parasympathetic state, gives the immune system a break and a chance to recover from the “fight or flight” mode, allowing one’s immune system a chance to recover before it becomes totally overwhelmed. Meditation allows our digestive system to perform naturally, and improves the air flow to our lungs, helps to balance our hormones, which means it has a good affect on PMS, menopause and fertility.

According to First Holistic, meditation lowers cholesterol, reduces blood pressure, reduces production of free radicals, which has been linked to many different illnesses and chronic conditions.

Kate Marchesiello, director of Kripaulu Center for Yoga and Health in Lenox, Massachussets, who has been hired by many large corporations to bring meditation to the executives, told her new learners that they will find that if you begin to practice meditation for even 5 to 10 minutes a day, a lot of the chaos and calamity begins to settle. The body uses oxygen more efficiently, the blood pressure drops and at the end of the day, you have a more calm and still mind.

Walking in nature, sitting quietly, painting (art), singing can all be forms of meditation. Focus on what inspires you whether it be a piece of music, a reading from a book, or even dreaming of being on a beach where no one else is; total peace of mind. You can meditate anywhere, and the great thing about meditation for healthy living is that you do not need to put on a pair of tights or be in any special position. Just sit in a comfy position, close your eyes and breathe in and out, until you notice the sensation of the air coming in and out of your nose.

Make up a “mantra”; a simple sound, such as “um..um..um..” As you breathe in, mentally repeat the sound; relax and as you exhale, hear the words “let go. At first, you will think of all the things you have to do; then, as you repeat your mantra, breathe in; breath out, you will notice a release of the tension in the belly, jaws and forehead.

Start meditation slowly. Kate Marchesiello suggests that even the most enthusiastic beginner need only set aside 5 to 10 minutes per day, in the first few weeks. Once you meditate, you will eventually enjoy this mode of relaxation and you are much more likely to increase the time meditation.

Many people meditate in the morning, to start their day off right. Stretch in bed, take a few moments to practice your breathing. Once you are out of bed, start your meditation, with your eyes closed and practice your breathing and your mantra over and over. Once you practice your meditation, when you go for a walk, you will notice the beauty of nature; breath in the fresh air. This has to be the healthiest recipe for healthy living ever.

Any ideas for a healthy living/cooking food blog?
I need a name for my new blog. I am a nutrition student and passionate about living well, cooking natural foods and experimenting with different recipes of all cuisines. I figure skate and I love to work out. I suffered from an eating disorder as a teenager and found that my love for cooking healthy versions of all types of foods helped me to overcome my outlook on eating and finding peace with my self. I’m sure I will include recipes, restaurants, new food products etc. in my blog. Any ideas?

When we eat or do physical exercise, the body produces a whole range of hormonal responses. So the foods we eat and the exercise (or lack of it !) will play a vital role in getting rid of that ugly fat. The most common hormones released are leptin, growth hormone and testosterone. The secret is to plan your diet and exercise around the cardinal principle of burning the fat while at the same time preserving the muscle mass. This article lists the foods and exercises which will help you to achieve a leaner body. There is a link to a fat burning program for those wishing to put their plan into action.

What Are The Fat Burning Foods?

Fat burning foods are a natural way to reduce the fat tissue in your body. Fat burning foods are those food items, generally natural plant foods, which burn more fat than the amount of calories they contain. Their positive effect is due to the fact that they contain cellulose, which is low in calories but burns a lot of fats, while the organism digests it. Fat burning foods are readily available and will definitely fit into your budget as well.

Fat burning foods and fat burning exercises are the ideal solution for individuals who are on a weight loss program. Fruits rich in vitamin C like limes, lemons, oranges, grapefruit and tangerines have fat burning properties. It you eat these fat burning foods and do some exercise, it will boost your metabolism and burn calories at a faster rate for several hours even after exercise. If you compare a dairy-rich versus a dairy-poor diet you can nearly double the rate of weight and fat loss with the same level of calorie restriction. This will help your body burning up the excessive stored fat. Generally most of these fruits contain Vitamin C as well, which also acts as a fat burner. Broccoli are delicious, while some of the other fat burning foods, for instance onion, are hardly the dessert of your dreams. But the good news is that the lack of energy that your body feels when you eat fat burning foods is compensated by energy obtained from your fat reserves, which otherwise will stay untouched for years. In this relation, it is a very big mistake to keep to fat burning foods for a couple of days and then rush for steaks and pizzas.

Some of the other fat burning foods are asparagus, beet root, cabbage, beet, zucchini, spinach, garlic, artichokes, tomatoes, carrot, apple, blueberries, and watermelon. You might think that eating bulk quantities of fat burning foods is the magic wand for becoming pin thin but actually it is not that easy because you will hardly be able to eat daily 5 kgs of broccoli, for example. Of course, all the ten servings should be fat burning foods. If you add exercise to your eating burning foods, you will achieve even better results because exercise will speed up your metabolism additionally. There are more than 100 foods that are fat burners among the stronger fat burning foods. Also, there are synthetic fat burners, so if you are not fond of chewing vegs all day, you can have some pills as a substitute, though there is no doubt that taking fat burning foods the natural way is the best approach.

What Is The Role Of Exercise?

Regardless, you should be doing a mix of both aerobic(fat-burning) exercises like jogging or interval training, and anaerobic (muscle-building)exercises like resistance or weight training.

Fat Burning Secrets

Foods that burn more calories than the amount of calories contained in the food itself are known as fat burning foods. They are all foods which burn fat faster than the amount of calories they contain. They are all-natural, low in calories, and with a high nutrient value, it has them being an excellent selection for a fat burning food. Most fruits are low in calories, carbs, and high in fibre that makes them a fantastic choice for developing a lean and toned body. You can learn a lot more about fat burning foods and fat burning secrets in the link below.

Lets say I eat a slice of pizza and then a half hour later I swim laps. Is it possible to burn off the fat/calories that I ate in the pizza before they have time to get processed through the body? Or is the fat that is burned during exercise stored fat?

It would make sense to me that after burning 'new fat' (the fat from the slice of pizza) that after that new fat is burned, THEN stored fat begins being burned off. Is that how it works?

Over the years, it has become very clear to me that one of the closest things to the “fountain of youth” may be obtained by regular activity such as walking or weight-bearing exercises; therefore, by strengthening muscles, boosting the amount of oxygen consumed, during the activity, you improve your aerobic ability by 15 to 20 per cent. The benefits derived from exercise has surprised Researchers (Consumer Reports) as they have found that these consistent exercises, may prolong life by adding as much as 10 to 20 years to your life if done consistently, which is a definite benefit to healthy living.

consistently shown that being active cuts the risk of early death by about 50 per cent for both sexes. Your heart becomes stronger, your lungs become healthier, and your joints will love you! Exercise stimulates the growth of new brain cells in older adults as well which is a definite plus.

According to Dr. Andrew Weil,in his book “Healthy Aging”, he states that “walking is the overall best exercise that can fullfill the body’s need for regular aerobic exercise, if you do it vigorously.” He also states “The human body is designed to walk, requires no equipment, and it carries the lowest risk of injury.” “The human body is designed to walk” Dr. Weil states.

Walking is a perfect conditioner for joints. It is something that we can do for life, and all we need is a good pair of walking shoes. Make certain you get fitted properly for your shoes. You have the option to join a walking club as well.

Obesity is becoming one of the top killers of North Americans, next to cancer and heart attacks and strokes. Exercise and lowering calories is the best thing you can do for your body. Use the stairs instead of the elevators. Park your vehicle further away so you have to walk further to get to it. Walk in the malls if you do not feel comfortable by yourself. Get a certified Nutritionist or Dietitian to set up a special program for your healthy eating and exercising. Above all, encourage your grandchildren to walk with you.

Exercise may reduce colon cancer by moving the wastes through the body faster; thus lowering the insulin levels. Researchers have found that exercise may also protect against breast cancer and prostate cancer by regulating hormones. If you find walking difficult, then try the swimming pools made available to you in your area. Swimming actually takes the stress of all the joints which is a big relief to your body, if walking is not your fortee.

Exercise can help keep you young by fighting the stresses in your life. Exercise actually lowers the stress hormones, and gives you a better outlook on life in general. It helps to keep depression and the blues away and regular aerobic exercise can work as well as anti-depressants. If you are able, buy a treadmill to put in your home to help initiate exercise.

Researchers have also found that moderate workouts may actually help reduce infections by temporarily boosting the immune system. The immune cells have a greater aggressive capacity to fight off infections. Fewer colds are caught by people who exercise.

Pelvic exercises may help to prevent erectile dysfunction and possibly benign prostate enlargement, which is of course, a common cause of urinary problems for men. These exercises are also excellent for women, but they would be called “Kegel” exercises, similar to holding your pelvic and anal muscles together. This will help to stop those annoying urinary drips if you work at these exercises regularly.

According to Consumers’ Health magazine, increasing activity aids in reducing night sweats, and sweating from menopausal activity, hot flashes, enhances menopausal moods. This seems to me a far better way then using pharmaceuticals to relieve these problems.

Exercising the upper body and using breathing exercises can reduce the need to use an inhaler in mild cases of asthma, new evidence shows, according to Consumer Report Health. So many people have inhalers, and if we can relieve the asthma mildly by exercise, why not try it first?

Lastly, control of our blood sugar levels ils very important. Exercise helps maintain a healthy blood-sugar level by increasing the cells’ sensitivity to insulin and thereby controlling body weight. Regular vigorous walking can significantly cut the risk of developing Diabetes Type 2.

A recent issue of “Health News” from the University of Toronto Faculty of Medicine looked at the problem of “exercise resistance.” Many of us can think of a million other things to do rather than exercise. Take a look at the reasons you may have resistance to exercise. It is often noted that the idea of exercise is hopeless, despairing, angry and you just do not feel like doing it.

Listed above are many of the reasons for exercising and what it does for your body and mind. Choose positive things in your life to include exercise. You will feel better for it and find out one of the secrets to better healthy living just by consistent exercise.

Listed above are the many reasons for increasing our level of exercise which have obvious healthy benefits for healthy living. I think it is time we do our part and become a pro-exerciser to improve our health, rather than relying on pharmaceuticals to save the day.

Healthy living is something everyone wants. We all want to be free of the chronic diseases such as candida, fibromyalgia, heart disease, diabetes, excess stress, complications of menopause, digestive problems, prostate issues, thyroid problems, poor memory and the ravages of arthritis. In Healthy Living you learn the three most important concepts to health and longevity. First is diet. Diet not only covers special eating for weight loss but also learning to eat well. Identifying dangerous foods in the diet and reducing or eliminating them is essential. Learning to consume and healthy diet and avoid dangerous foods is not that difficult. The number of dangerous foods is really not that many and include high sugar and starchy foods consumed to excess. By eliminating just a few foods you can greatly reduce your chances of developing such chronic conditions as candida, fibromyalgia, heart disease, diabetes, excess stress, complications of menopause, digestive problems, prostate issues, thyroid problems, poor memory and the ravages of arthritis because each of these condition is the result of poor living habits. Exercise is the next of the three health wonders. The human body was meant to move. Many of the chronic conditions we worry about today such as candida, fibromyalgia, heart disease, diabetes, excess stress, complications of menopause, digestive problems, prostate issues, thyroid problems, poor memory and the ravages of arthritis. It may be surprising, but all of these …
Help answer the question about healthy living
How come I can't find any books on healthy living other than the one on medical problems?
I have been looking for books about healthy living. I'm trying to find ones that give testament to an organic lifestyle. One that includes no processed foods, sugars, and other things that are bad for you. All I can find are books for eating healthy to cure diseases. I don't currently have cancer or another disease, I just want to transition to a healthier lifestyle.
Does anyone know of any books like this. I would really appreciate it.

Grapes were the food of the Gods in Rome, fed to them by slaves while they reclined in their baths. During the reign of Cleopatra, many natural foods were consumed as well. And we continue to promote the very foods the Romans ate, to boast a wealth of healthy living benefits.

The darker the natural food, the more powerful the cancer fighters inside your body are. Fruits such as blackberries, blueberries, purple grapes, figs, cranberries and good quality plums, should be consumed on a regular basis for a wealth of healthful benefits.

Purple grapes rule. These are the richest tasting table grapes; Choose bunches of these beauties with pliable stems and plump, full-colored berries. Purple grapes can be stored in refrigerator for up to one week, as long as they are unwashed. When ready to serve, rinse well. Purple grapes are like “a little bit of heaven” when put on cereal, waffles or served with light cheese. Chopped grapes make a delightful substitution for syrup or sugar. The healthy bonus is purple grapes contain Manganese and fibre.

Super-sweet figs are one of the fruit family’s greatest delicacies. These deep purple beauties should be free of bruises and have their stems intact in order to keep well as figs are picked when they are fully ripe. Serve at once or chill up to 2 days; return to room temperature prior to serving. Many people cut the figs and put a dribble of honey on them; this is optional. The healthy bonus of figs is they are rich in fibre, potassium and manganese.

Cranberries are such a delight when served fresh cooked with turkey and dressing. These tart, delightful tasty berries can be frozen up to 6 months and they even will last up to 2 months in the refrigerator. Do not wash cranberries until ready to use. Favorite recipes for cranberries are muffins, pumpkin bread, scones, salads, often are used in dried form to snack on. One package of cranberries with 1 cup sugar stirred in and simmered for 30 minutes will provide the most delightful sauce. Healthy bonus of cranberries is they contain Vitamin C and fiber.

Dark plums are delightful to use as a snack, for lunches, canned, made in an upside down cake, or stewed. Good quality plums have just the right balance of sweet and tart flavor. Ripen plums at room temperature; they are ready to eat when the fruit gives slightly when squeezed. Black plums (dark dark purple) are grown usually in Chile, are fairly expensive, but oh so tasty! Always remember to wash any fruits carefully before drying and consuming. Healthy bonus of eating plums is they contain Vitamin C and fiber.

Purple fruits are one of the most scrumptious fruits, very satisfying and offer us a wealth of healthful benefits. Remember these gems in your eating plans for good health.
