That's one of the mysteries of life. Docs don't know what causes IBS but they know stress contributes to it. They will be able to tell by hearing your symptoms usually. If they are not sure they will send you to a Gastroenterologist and he will listen to your symptoms and if he is not sure he may give you medication to see if it helps, if not he may have to do a scope.
