Endometriosis

Endometriosis, a condition that occurs somewhat frequently in women during their childbearing years, results in the uterine lining, or endometrium, growing outside of the uterus. The endometrium will thicken with menstruation, however , as the tissue is growing outside of the uterus in the body, there is no place for the uterine lining to escape when it breaks down, resulting in inflammation and scars around the affected areas. The situation is further worsened as time progresses, with each menstrual cycle adding more endometrium, which breaks down and more blood collects in the body with no means of escape. This growth of endometrium will increase the severity of the symptoms of endometriosis, causing further discomfort.

Endometriosis treatment consists of a variety of methods including hormone therapy and surgeries. Laparoscopic surgery is used to remove uterine lining growing outside of the uterus and to enable the patient to still possibly bear children. In more serious cases, endometriosis treatment will require the uterus to be removed with a hysterectomy procedure.

Cancer

In addition to the aforementioned conditions, hysterectomies are used in response to several different types of cancer. Endometrial cancer, also known as uterine cancer, affects the uterine lining, or endometrium. Endometrial cancer occurs when the uterine lining begins to thicken without leaving the uterus. Treatments include a hysterectomy procedure to remove the uterus.

Cervical cancer, which occurs when cells in the cervix begin to uncontrollably grow, is often treated surgically. This will require removal of the pelvic lymph nodes during a hysterectomy procedure.

Finally, tumors growing on the ovaries can mean a diagnosis of ovarian cancer, which can be treated surgically. In addition to the ovaries, the uterus may have to be removed as well. After surgery, chemotherapy is used to kill any remaining cancer cells.

Uterine Fibroids

Uterine fibroids are tumors that grow on the outside, the inside, or in the wall of the uterus. While uterine fibroids occur quite frequently in women, with 80% of women developing them, uterine fibroids are most often benign, in fact less than 0.1% of uterine fibroids prove to be cancerous, or less than one in 1,000.

While most women with uterine fibroids do not experience any symptoms, those that do can be subjected to extremely uncomfortable symptoms. Uterine fibroid symptoms include painful periods with excessive bleeding, fullness in the abdomen, and lower back pains. Some women with uterine fibroids experience problems with sexual function and satisfaction. In addition, uterine fibroids can often cause reproductive problems such as infertility, which is rather rare, as well as other problems during pregnancy.

Once uterine fibroids are diagnosed, many women will not need treatment as most do not experience any discomfort from the condition. However, those women that do have discomfort from uterine fibroids do have several options for treatment. These options include over-the-counter medications to relieve pain, and birth control pills to lighten periods. For some more serious cases, surgery is often recommended. These surgeries include a myomectomy for women still wanting to have children, or a hysterectomy for women either past their child bearing years or who no longer want to have children.

Myomectomy

One of the biggest consequences of a hysterectomy procedure is that it eliminates the possibility of a woman having children after undergoing the procedure. The reason for this is that most if not all the necessary structures for reproduction will be removed in the hysterectomy procedure. Because of this, women who have a uterine fibroid problem, but still might want to have children, should consider a less limiting procedure known as a myomectomy.

A myomectomy is a surgical procedure that only removes the uterine fibroids, while keeping the uterus and other reproductive structures intact. This allows women who undergo the procedure to still possible bear children.

A myomectomy is performed with either an open incision in a laparotomy, or with smaller abdominal incisions in a laparoscopy. As the procedure does use the same methods as a laparoscopic hysterectomy procedure, it does carry the same inherent drawbacks.

A myomectomy procedure can also be performed using the Da Vinci Surgical System. During a Da Vinci Robotic Surgery, a surgeon can achieve a remarkable level of precision in a myomectomy, and even in uterine reconstruction after the fibroids have been removed. This precision is extremely important in preventing uterine rupture during any possible future pregnancies.

As we mentioned in previous articles, endometriosis growing somewhere else other than the endometrium also reacts to hormonal signals of the monthly menstrual cycle by building up tissue, breaking it, and eliminating it through the menstrual period. As we know, herbs play a very important role in some cultures in treating all kinds of diseases. In this article, we will discuss how fennel seed helps to treat endometriosis.
<br />I. Definition
Fennel is a plant in the genus foeniculum family and is also known as xiao hui xiang in Chinese medicine. It has been used for thousand of years to enhance lactation, treat absence of period, and loss of appetite.

II. How fennel seed effects women with endometriosis
1. Phytoestrogen
Fennel seed contains phytoestrogen which inhibits the level of estrogen if it is too high, and raise the level of estrogen if it is too low. For that reason, it has been used in treating hormonal imbalance that causes menstrual disorder, such as cramps and nervous tension.

2. Absence of proriod
It is said that fennel seed helps to release the blood stagnation in the abdomen caused by imbalance of the yang and ying qi. By increasing the blood flow to the region, it helps to bring back the harmony of the reproductive organ resulting in smoothing the uterine muscles as well as bringing on the absence of period.

3. Liver enhancer
Fennel seed helps to normalize the liver function that increases the liver in fat and protein metabolism which helps to inhibit the bad estrogen in the women’s body before or during menstrual cycle. High levels of bad estrogen not only elevates endometrial cramps but also increases the risk of cancer and abnormal cell growth

4. Digestive system
It is also a herb used to increase the function of digestive system resulting in better absorbing of vitamins and minerals that are usually lacking in women with endometriosis during menstrual cycle.

5. Immune system
Besides helping in milk production, fennel seed also helps to strengthen the immune system in fighting against foreign invasion of bacteria, virus, and forming of free radicals as well as endometrial implants and adhesion.

If you believe you have endometriosis you should see a doctor immediately – plain and simple. Endometriosis is nearly impossible to diagnose without the help of a trained medical professional. In fact, it’s best to consult a doctor who specializes in women’s health. Generally, a routine physical examination can rule out endometriosis or require further tests to be performed. Once tests are performed it is fairly easy to conclusively diagnose endometriosis.

In addition to physical examinations, doctors have a variety of tests at their disposal to render a diagnosis of endometriosis. Imaging tests rely on the use of complicated machines that can actually create visual representations of what is going on inside the human body. In addition to letting doctors know what is going on, imaging tests can also pinpoint cysts and other abnormalities that may exist in the uterus. There are two commonly used imaging tests: Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) and ultrasound.

When you get an MRI you are usually placed inside a machine, although newer technologies for a less claustrophobic experience are becoming more common. An MRI renders a three-dimensional image of a designated area of the human body. Using magnetic fields an MRI can provide a doctor with a superbly detailed image.

Ultrasound is another form of imaging used to diagnose endometriosis. This imaging technique has been used most often to observe the unborn fetus in the womb. However, there are other uses for ultrasound. Using soundwaves, this imaging device can also provide doctors with a clear picture of what is going on.

Biochemical markers are another excellent method that doctors and medical professionals can use to find out if endometriosis is present. Through research, it has been discovered that there are certain chemicals in the blood of women that have developed endometriosis that are not found in the same concentration in women without the condition. Researchers have developed tests that look for a specific antigen and a specific protein, which can often lead the way to a successful diagnosis. This is the least costly test other than a physical examination, and takes the least amount of time – all it requires is a small sample of blood to analyze.

Laparoscopy is another way to diagnose if a woman has developed endometriosis. This test is conducted by creating a small incision into the pelvic region. A tiny camera is then fed into the hole and doctors can watch the findings on a computer monitor. On the tip of the camera there is an equally tiny apparatus for collecting tissue. A tissue sample can be obtained in this way and analyzed to see if endometriosis has developed.

The only way to find out which test may be appropriate for you is to consult your doctor. These tests are highly effective in helping doctors to determine whether endometriosis is the correct diagnosis or whether there is another cause for the symptoms. Before undergoing any of these tests it is a good idea that you familiarize yourself with each one of them. It is important to understand what you are getting into before you undergo any medical procedure.

Trying to overcome endometriosis without gaining weight can be hard as a number of the medications recommended for treating the condition have weight gain as one of the side effects of the medication. However, there are steps you can take to keep your figure as slim and shapely as possible.

Battle Weight Gain Caused by Endometriosis Medications

Many of the popular endometriosis medications have an unfortunate side effect – weight gain. For women, this is almost as bad as the painful symptoms the medicine is trying to treat. Here are some things you can do if your endometriosis medication seems to have you piling on the pounds.

• Increase Fiber Intake – Even if your medication is causing you to put on more pounds, you can counter this effectively by increasing your fiber intake. Foods rich in fiber are pretty hard for your stomach to digest. Because of this, eating these foods will make you feel fuller than usual -even if you’ve only consumed a small amount. They also improve the digestion process and can reduce the amount of estrogen in your system, so it has the added benefit of potentially reducing symptoms too.

• Exercise – One of the best ways to keep your weight down is by exercising more. But contrary to popular opinion, exercise doesn’t have to be boring or done alone. Choose an activity you enjoy… or enlist the help of an “exercise buddy” to keep you on track. When you get down to it, exercising is simply a means of moving your body and preventing it from getting weak. You can add more exercise to your life in simple ways – by walking to and from work instead of taking the car, taking the stairs, joining a dancing class or pursing a sport you enjoy.

• Less Stress and More Rest – Simple things like stress and rest have a profound effect on your weight. If you’re taking medication for endometriosis and it’s causing you to gain weight, the pounds you gain will increase even more if your stress levels are too high. Stress also encourages us to eat the wrong sort of convenience or comfort foods. So, try to maintain a restful and relaxed attitude then there’s a good possibility that you can smile your way into having a more healthy and sexy figure!

• Food Choices – Naturally, you can reduce the number of pounds you’re gaining because of your endometriosis medication by eating healthily. Eliminate fried foods and visits to fast food joints. From now on think before you eat and only chose healthy options: eat more fresh vegetables and less fatty, processed meat. Eat more fresh fruits and less sugar-rich foods. You might want to consult with a trained nutritionist to find out what would constitute a balanced diet for you.

• Take Herbal Remedies – There’s an herb for every ailment that affects mankind or in this case, womankind, and endometriosis is fortunately no exception. Just make sure that whatever herbal remedy you choose to help you lose weight while treating endometriosis at the same time is safe for your health. Talk with your doctor before you start taking anything new.

• Consider alternative treatments – Learn all you can about the alternative therapies out there. Acupuncture, aromatherapy and homeopathy offer some interesting options that are all natural, side effect free ways of managing endometriosis. Some women report a significant reduction in symptoms with these methods, so if you’re interested, discuss your thoughts with your doctor.
Sign up below for the free newsletter that has many more suggestions for natural endometriosis treatments that you can use alongside traditional forms of treatment.

If you are finding that you are still struggling with excess weight after you have been following a healthy diet and incorporated exercise into your life, then speak to your doctor to see what alternatives they suggest to overcome endometriosis without the weight gain.

Endometriosis is a problem affecting a woman’s uterus – the place where a baby grows when she’s pregnant. Endometriosis is when the kind of tissue that normally lines the uterus grows somewhere else. It can grow on the ovaries, behind the uterus or on the bowels or bladder. Rarely, it grows in other parts of the body.

Symptoms of Endometriosis

Dysmenorrhea – Painful, sometimes disabling menstrual cramps; pain may get worse over time (progressive pain)

Chronic pelvic pain – typically accompanied by lower back pain and/or abdominal pain.

Dyspareunia – Painful sex

Dyschezia – Painful bowel movements

Nausea, vomiting, and/or diarrhea

If a girl notices these symptoms, it doesn’t necessarily mean that she has endometriosis. Lots of other things — like an infection — may cause similar symptoms. But it’s important to see a doctor right away if you notice these symptoms. If you haven’t been examined by a gynecologist for the first time yet, this is a good time.

What causes endometriosis?

Experts do not know what causes endometrial tissue to grow outside your uterus. But they do know that the female hormone estrogen makes the problem worse. Women have high levels of estrogen during their childbearing years. It is during these years-usually from their teens into their 40s-that women have endometriosis. Estrogen levels drop when menstrual periods stop (menopause).

Another possibility is that areas lining the pelvic organs possess primitive cells that are able to grow into other forms of tissue, such as endometrial cells. (This process is termed coelomic metaplasia.)

The endometrium is at its thinnest immediately following menstruation and thickens during the first 2 weeks of your menstrual cycle as a result of increasing levels of the hormone progesterone.

Diagnosing endometriosis

There is no simple test that can be used to diagnose endometriosis. In fact, the only reliable way to definitively diagnose endometriosis is by performing a laparoscopy and to take a biopsy of the tissue. This is what is known as “the golden standard”.

However, this is an expensive, invasive proceduce. Furthermore, if the surgeon is not a specialist in endometriosis s/he may not recognise the disease, which can result in a “negative” diagnosis.

CA125 Test is a blood test that checks levels of a blood protein known as CA125, which is a tumor marker for certain gynecological cancers, but is also used to detect a specific protein found in the blood of women who have endometriosis. However, it is important to note that CA125 levels also may be increased during pregnancy, menstruation and in the presence of other non-cancerous gynecologic diseases or cancers.

Endometriosis – Treatment

Endometriosis symptoms, no pregnancy plans

If you have endometrial pain or bleeding and no immediate plans to become pregnant, birth control hormones (patch, pills, or ring) or anti-inflammatories (NSAIDs) may be all that you need to control pain. Birth control hormones help shrink endometrial tissue and reduce pain for most women.

Hormonal therapy using progesterone medications are another effective treatment for endometriosis. Progesterone pills or injections can be used. However, side effects can be a problem for some women. The possible side effects include depression, weight gain, and spotting of blood.

Anti-gonadotropin drugs such as Synarel and Depo Lupron prevent the ovary from producing estrogen. Potential side effects of these drugs include menopausal symptoms (such as hot flashes), vaginal dryness, mood changes, and early loss of calcium from the bones.

This bleeding can cause pain and swelling because, unlike a normal monthly period, the blood from endometriosis can’t escape from the body through the vagina. Instead, the blood stays inside the body and may form rubbery bands of scar tissue, called adhesions. These can attach organs and tissues together and affect organs surrounding the womb.

Causes of Endometriosis

No one knows for sure what causes this disease. One theory is that during menstruation some of the menstrual tissue backs up through the fallopian tubes into the abdomen, where it implants and grows. Another theory suggests that endometriosis may be genetic, or runs in families.

Researchers also are looking at the role of the immune system and how it either stimulates or reacts to endometriosis. It may be that a woman’s immune system does not remove the menstrual fluid in the pelvic cavity properly, or the chemicals made by areas of endometriosis may irritate or promote growth of more areas. Results from a recent study showed that women who have the disease are more likely than other women to have immune system disorders in which the body attacks its own tissues. This study also found that women with endometriosis are more likely to have chronic fatigue syndrome and to suffer from fibromyalgia syndrome-a disease involving pain in the muscles, tendons, and ligaments.

Symptoms of endometriosis

Endometriosis is not an easy diagnosis to make. Symptoms such as chronic pelvic pain, menstrual pain, bloating, painful sex, or pelvic discomfort between ovulation and your period do heighten the index of suspicion, but aren’t conclusive. Notably, some women have the condition without symptoms, while others have these symptoms but no endometriosis. An experienced practitioner can tell much from a pelvic exam, but the only definitive diagnosis is surgical. This is another reason we recommend a natural approach as a first step to see if it provides symptom relief.

The cause of endometriosis is not known, although there are several theories. It’s possible that more than one theory is correct, and there are probably multiple pathways to developing the condition. One very likely contributing factor that can be reduced with natural methods is the estrogen-like chemicals that surround us, known as xenoestrogens.

The signs and symptoms of endometriosis include painful menses, pain with sexual intercourse, lower back or abdominal pain, sterility and constipation. In advanced cases of endometriosis, pain of the bladder, kidneys and bowel may become evident as well.

Treatment of Endometriosis

Treatment depends on the how bad the symptoms are, the severity of the disease, the woman’s desire to have children in the future, and her age.

Some women with mild disease and symptoms may just be monitored. It is important to maintain a regular schedule of examinations (every 6 to 12 months) to note any changes or to see if the disease has gotten worse.

Stopping the menstrual cycle creates a state resembling pregnancy (pseudopregnancy) and can help prevent the disease from getting worse. Pseudopregnancy can be created using oral contraceptives containing estrogen and progesterone. Women take the medicine consistently for 6 to 9 months. This type of therapy relieves most of the symptoms, but does not prevent scarring from the disease. Side effects include spotting of blood.

To be able to explain more about the nature and prevention of endometriosis, it would be helpful to know more about the relationship of endometriosis and birth control pills. To be able to find solutions and relief for the painful symptoms of the disease, knowledge and understanding is necessary.

It is estimated that there are about 5 million women who are affected by endometriosis in the United States alone. The figure sits at around 70 million worldwide.

Endometriosis is the name of a medical condition where endometrial tissues, similar to those found in the uterus, are located in different areas in the body. In the same way as the endometrium in the uterus undergoes the process of growing, shedding and bleeding each month inline with the menstrual cycle, these tissues do so too.

It is still unknown why these tissues sometimes grow in other parts of the body like the intestines, the back, the neck, the head and the abdomen.

But when menstruation occurs these tissues breakdown and bleed too, resulting in pain caused by the inflammation and scarring associated with this process.

Endometriosis is a progressive chronic condition, which means that it worsens over time. As the scarring increases, adhesions can form. These are ropes of scar tissue that fan out from endometrial deposits and can attach themselves to other organs. Cysts are also common.

So, how can birth control pills help?

It is the level of the female hormones that make birth control pills effective in preventing pregnancy, which help with endometriosis symptoms. Because birth control pills lower estrogen levels and increase progesterone in the body, they are also deemed effective in alleviating the symptoms of endometriosis.

Prescriptions

Of course, birth control pills are usually taken in prescriptions. But there are some contraceptive pills that are easily accessible in the market. However, for the purpose of controlling or eliminating the painful symptoms of endometriosis, you should always seek a prescription from your doctor for the pills.

That is because although you would be taking the same pills used in birth control, the dosage and use would have to be modified. To make it clear, for birth control purposes, there are placebo pills that the woman takes during several days of the month. In contrast, women who are trying to decrease the symptoms of endometriosis should not take placebo pills. Active pills are intended to be taken all year round by women who want to make endometriosis pains stop.

There are many treatments for endometriosis nowadays. There are the numerous modern medicines and alternatives to traditional medications available. While there are many women who try to use the two groups of medications, many consider using birth control pills to control endometriosis a good option.

Sign up below to the free newsletter to discover natural alternatives for endometriosis relief that can be used instead of or in conjunction with other traditional forms of treatment.

Endometriosis and birth control are interrelated. But before using contraceptives as an endometriosis treatment, make sure you are properly advised by your own gynecologist or doctor.

In this article, we will discuss how Szechuan lovage root helps to treat endometriosis.

I. Definition
Szechuan lovage is native to India and Nepal. It is a flowering plant in the carrot family. It’s root has been used in Chinese medicine in treating blood stagnation, stagnant qi and blood stasis.

II. How Szechuan lovage root effects women with endometriosis
1. Blood stagnation
Schchuan lovage root is said to contain substances that help to improve blood flow caused by blood stagnation in the abdominal region. By releasing the qi flow, it helps to relax the tension of the uterine muscles that cause menstrual cramps for women with endometriosis.

2. Liver enhancer
By releasing the stagnant qi and blood stagnation that blocks the regular function of the liver, it helps to enhance the metabolism of fat and protein that is necessary for balancing the estrogen levels in the women’s body during menstrual cycle as well as reducing nervous tension that causes menstrual cramps.

3. Sedative
It is also a nervous system tonic herb that helps to calm the overactive brain cells during menstrual cycle that causes symptoms of endometriosis such as insomnia, irritation, anger, agreession, etc. It’s sedative agent also helps to relax the uterine muscles leading to lessening the menstrual pain.

4. Emmenagogue
The property of emmenagogue in Szechuan lovage root also helps to bring on menstruation by increasing blood flow to the region that releases the tension of abdomen due to absence of period.

5. Analgesic
It is also an analgesic, which helps to ease pain for women with menstrual cramps.

6. Vasodilation
This property in Szechuan lovage root helps to widen the blood vessels in the abdominal region, that not only increases blood flow but also helps in relaxation of abdominal muscle cells within the vessel walls resulting in easing the period pains.

Endometriosis is a condition caused by excess estrogen created each month in the female body. Endometriosis affect an estimated 89 million women (usually around 30 to 40 years of age who have never been pregnant before) of reproductive age around the world. Endometriosis can also cause scar tissue and adhesions to develop that can distort a woman’s internal anatomy. It is estimated that 30-40% of women with endometriosis are infertile. Endometriosis is a condition where tissue similar to the lining of the uterus (the endometrial stroma and glands. Endometrial cells are the same cells that are shed each month during menstruation. The most common symptom of endometriosis is pelvic pain. Other symptoms may include diarrhoea or constipation (in particular in connection with menstruation) ,abdominal bloating heavy or irregular bleeding and fatigue.

Ovarian cysts are enlargements of the ovary that appear to be filled with fluid. The ovaries are two organs — each about the size and shape of an almond — located on each side of a woman’s uterus. Small cysts are formed outside of the ovary, which enlarge and produce endometriosis of the ovary. Hormone stimulation during the menstrual cycle produces many small cysts that eventually occupy the normal ovarian tissue. Ovarian cysts can be categorized as noncancerous or cancerous growths. All of the following are noncancerous ovarian growths or cysts. A woman may develop 1 or more of them.Cysts are painful and potentially harmful conditions. They are an important cause of pain in the lower abdomen ( pain in area below the belly button).

Treatment options for endometriosis can depend on your age. Surgery is one of the most effective methods of treating endometriosis so long as all the endo has been removed from the offending areas. Danazol therapy should be started when the patient is menstruating. Testosterone derivatives are another medication that was developed just for endometriosis. Hysterectomy – the uterus is removed, along with endometrial implants, cysts and adhesions. Major Surgery. For severe cases of endometriosis, major surgery used to be the mainstay to remove thick adhesions and excise endometriomas (endometriotic cysts of the ovary). Surgery to remove most of the endometrial patches followed by hormone treatment may be better at long-term easing of symptoms than just surgery alone. Some women with endometriosis who want to have children may need fertility treatment.

Endometriosis Treatment Tips

1. Surgical treatment is the preferred approach to infertile patients with advanced endometriosis.

2. Oral contraceptive pills (OCPs) suppress LH and FSH and prevent ovulation.

3. Gestrinone is similar to danazol, but you only need to take it twice a week rather than daily.

4. Birth control pills help shrink endometrial tissue and improve pain for most women.

5. Stronger hormone therapy such as therapy with a gonadotropin-releasing hormone agonist (GnRH-a), high-dose progestin.

6. Caffeine, sugar and alcohol are the three most often cited items that women have removed from their diets.
