It is the level of the female hormones that make birth control pills effective in preventing pregnancy, which help with endometriosis symptoms. Because birth control pills lower estrogen levels and increase progesterone in the body, they are also deemed effective in alleviating the symptoms of endometriosis.

Prescriptions

Of course, birth control pills are usually taken in prescriptions. But there are some contraceptive pills that are easily accessible in the market. However, for the purpose of controlling or eliminating the painful symptoms of endometriosis, you should always seek a prescription from your doctor for the pills.

That is because although you would be taking the same pills used in birth control, the dosage and use would have to be modified. To make it clear, for birth control purposes, there are placebo pills that the woman takes during several days of the month. Treatment options for endometriosis can depend on your age. Surgery is one of the most effective methods of treating endometriosis so long as all the endo has been removed from the offending areas. Danazol therapy should be started when the patient is menstruating. Testosterone derivatives are another medication that was developed just for endometriosis. Hysterectomy – the uterus is removed, along with endometrial implants, cysts and adhesions. Major Surgery. For severe cases of endometriosis, major surgery used to be the mainstay to remove thick adhesions and excise endometriomas (endometriotic cysts of the ovary). Surgery to remove most of the endometrial patches followed by hormone treatment may be better at long-term easing of symptoms than just surgery alone. Some women with endometriosis who want to have children may need fertility treatment.

Endometriosis Treatment Tips

1. Surgical treatment is the preferred approach to infertile patients with advanced endometriosis.

2. Oral contraceptive pills (OCPs) suppress LH and FSH and prevent ovulation.

3. Gestrinone is similar to danazol, but you only need to take it twice a week rather than daily.

4. Birth control pills help shrink endometrial tissue and improve pain for most women.

5. Stronger hormone therapy such as therapy with a gonadotropin-releasing hormone agonist (GnRH-a), high-dose progestin.

6. Caffeine, sugar and alcohol are the three most often cited items that women have removed from their diets.

Should pregnancy occur, it can often alleviate symptoms because neither ovulation nor menstruation occurs during this time.

However, it is worth noting that endometriosis symptoms often return after the pregnancy and can be just as bad or worse.

Palliative measures include use of medications, such as analgesic agents and prostaglandin inhibitors, for pain.

Hormonal therapy is effective in suppressing endometriosis and relieving dysmenorrhea (menstrual pain). Oral contraceptives are used frequently. Side effects that may occur with oral contraceptives include fluid retention, weight gain, or nausea. These can usually be managed by changing brands or formulations. Injectable contraceptives agents may also be used.

Several types of hormonal therapy are also available in addition to the oral contraceptives.

A synthetic androgen, danazol (Danocrine), can cause atrophy of the endometrium and subsequent amenorrhea (menstruation stops). The medication inhibits the release of gonadotropin with minimal overt sex hormone stimulation. The drawbacks of this medication are that it’s expensive; and may cause side effects such as fatigue, weight gain, mild acne, depression, oily skin, hot flashes, decreased breast size, and vaginal atrophy (dryness).

Surgical Options

If the treatment methods outlined above are not helpful, surgery may be necessary to relieve pain and enhance the possibility of pregnancy. Surgery may be combined with use of medical therapy. The procedure selected depends on the patient.

Laparoscopy may be used to remove endometrial implants and release adhesions.

Laser surgery is another option made possible by laparoscopy. Laser surgery vaporizes or coagulates the endometrial implants, thereby destroying this tissue.

For women older than 35 or those willing to sacrifice reproductive capability, a total hysterectomy is an option, although less likely to be recommended than previously. As Endometriosis can occur outside of the reproductive organs it recurs in many women after a hysterectomy unless all the endometrial implants have been removed.

Generally, surgical management is used when the extreme pain caused by endometriosis becomes debilitating. Or when a patient is trying to become pregnant. Surgical treatments tend to be more successful than medical ones when it comes to fertility issues.

Laparoscopy is a relatively non-invasive procedure, especially in the diagnostic phase of your infertility treatment. It can be a lot more invasive, and can be considered a major surgery when it is used to treat endometriosis.

To perform a laparoscopic procedure, your doctor will make a small incision near your navel. Your abdomen will be filled with carbon dioxide to inflate it. This allows the doctor to then insert the laparoscope and inspect your reproductive organs and abdominal cavity. The inflation gives the doctor plenty of room to look around. Your body may be tilted back during the procedure so that your intestines and other organs will shift higher up into your body. This gives the surgeon a more clear view of your reproductive organs.

The laparoscope itself is like a tiny, long telescope. It projects a light into your body so that the surgeon can look around. Your doctor may need to make a second incision near your pubic bone to insert other surgical tools. Endometriosis may be quite visible, but sometimes it is not visible to the naked eye. Your surgeon may take biopsies of tissue from your body during the laparoscopic procedure. The tissues will be examined under a microscope to confirm or deny the presence of endometriosis.

Endometriosis is a condition that causes the endometrium, normally lining your uterus, to grow outside of the uterus and attach itself to surrounding structures and organs. Adhesions and scar tissue can form inside of your abdominal and pelvic regions, causing a lot of pain, discomfort and fertility problems. Endometriosis can be mild and may not be discovered until a laparoscopic procedure is performed. If endometriosis affects your ovaries or fallopian tubes, then it can keep eggs from passing through to your uterus for implantation. Endometriosis is a progressive condition and can get worse over time.

Symptoms of endometriosis include abnormally heavy bleeding during menstruation, extremely painful menstrual cramps that last for days, back pain, painful intercourse, urination or defecation. These symptoms can be very similar to other infections or disorders. Therefore, endometriosis may be overlooked until infertility is a concern.

If endometriosis is discovered, your infertility specialist can use laparoscopy as part of the surgical treatment. A pelvis afflicted by endometriosis can also include adhesions, cysts, scar tissue and endometrial implants. Your surgeon will attempt to remove endometrial implants, drain cysts, separate and loosen adhesions and scar tissue. Laser treatment may be used to cut away adhesions, scar tissue and cysts.
